Posting from my New Favorite Place for Coffee in the City… Kind of.
The Creamery is Located kitty-corner o the Caltain Station at 4th and King. After rushing by it about a million times, I finally stopped in recently. This is my 2nd visit, and I can safely say they are outrageously well priced considering their location, their food is delicious, and the service is exemplary. The staff is very knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive. Also, the girl behind the register today looks like Karen from The Office with more freckles, which, however unindicitive of the establishment’s quality, is a really pleasant addition to my day. The Creamery also has a strong wi-fi connection, although there is not an outlet in the place. Some points lost.
Anyway,
Today was another solitary (but not unpleasant ;) ) trip on Caltrain. Actually, I don’t do that very often, usually I take BART to go see my friends in Oakland, and putter around in with the lounge I throw my show at. Today I opted for Caltrain because I’m due at a meeting very close to 4th and King.
The Supperclub, a well-established and very profitably active club, contacted me and asked me if I would be interested in hosting a “Swingin’ Singles’ 70’s Soul” Party for Valentines Day, and if I would meet with one of their promoters today to discuss details for the possibility. I’m not entirely sure how they came to hear about me, or my interest in management and promotion, which is only one reason I’m skeptical and unwilling at this point.
Supperclub has a history of indiscriminant promotion and parties, besides an ongoing streak of semi-regular Psy-Trance heads. Indiscriminant crowds and Psy-Trance junkies are two of my least favorite crowds to be a part of. The event page is bare, an unprofessional and badly planned mark so close to an event date. The flyer is uselessly laid-out and ugly, and I’ve heard that other people with less interest in promotion specifically have been contacted for the same hosting position… photographers and party-frequenters, not even ones who would be regularly at the venue… it all wreaks of last-minute planning and desperation.
The venue itself is not so bad. Their sound system is not amazing, but easily tamed in their simple square space. There is a bar, a 4-sided balcony, and the mediocre execution of a “club in bed” concept; everything is white, and the room is skirted in big fluffy white mattresses. It has the potential to be an interesting space with good planning, and the potential to be a generic but accommodating space for a last-minute something that I could throw together.
It all really depends on how much power these people are willing to give me. I’m going to be honest with them, and tell them that if I’m not allowed to book my own DJ’s for the night, then I am uninterested in hosting. I have heard horror stories of the owners and managers of this place… Manipulative people who will bribe an take advantage of hosts and guests, especially younger ones. Little do they know my level head and vast experience in these matters for a young lady of 21 ;).
I’m really hoping all goes well for 3 particular reasons:
a) A lways good to have another solid event under my belt, both to practice my booking and promotional skills (especially under such short notice, and for a weeknight, always a challenge), and to give my DJ’s an opportunity to play.
b) I’ll get paid for every guest in attendance. I’ll find out today how many people they expect me to rally, what admission cost is, and what my cut will be. I also need to remember to ask about average drink costs, and any drink specials or other promotions they might have in mind (I won’t be surprised if there’s none to speak of, which would be a shame, as Valentine’s is a great opportunity to get away with super gimmicky things of that nature). I also need to find out what they usually do on Tuesdays… If there is a regular crowd of losers fighting for dance-floor space, the deal will be broken.
* I should also see what else is going on in the area and that night that might offer competition for my crowd, although as far as I know, no one has plans.
c) There’s this dress in the window of a lingerie shop in my neighborhood, a strapless red corseted thing with garters and a chiffon bustle and floor-length train. Really stunning. What the hell other excuse would I have to wear that? x)
Time to apply my ‘sweet but all business and surprisingly savvy’ make-up ;)
*intermission of application :)*

General Thoughts for the Day:
Why the fuck doesn’t Caltrain have Wi-fi?? The VTA lightrail does, which is almost completely useless as most people don’t ride it for more than 3-5 stops, long enough to…. Tweet? It literally says in their user agreement that the service is provided for passengers to “check routes, their email, and Tweet.”
-_-. When will the world accept that Tumblr is an INFINITELY BETTER interface? Maybe never.
I hope they were sponsored for that endorsement, but I really doubt it.

I do so love to see into people’s backyards from the train. Such an excellent time to survey the surrounding human condition, the diversity and distribution.
There is always some poor boy on the train who is amazed and enamored by my ability to type with out looking at the screen, my camera strap in my mouth and my eyes out he window, waiting to see good graffiti and snap a photo just in time. I do my best to kindly ignore them, as I prefer these rides i designate for mself to remain solitary for concentration, and am not often in the mood to surrender them to conversation… especially conversation that may well end in a request for my contact information x). Boys go their whole lives summoning the courage to talk to girls on trains who look this interesting ^_^. I would know, I spend a fair mount of time summoning such courage, on trains and otherwise.
Pieces I missed: down in the trees on fence, and around a sewage tunnel low and left just past Burlingame station.
There is a remarkably HUGE and very CLEAN giraffa piece and a few other good ones that would be worth the walking to, between Santa Clara and Lawrence. Have to make time for that very soon before an unappreciator goes and scribbles on it. Adventure time!
I missed everything between 22nd and 4th/King, which is where all the most complete and beautiful bombs are; again, I’ve been saying it so long, and now feel like I’m “old enough” by my father’s standards to walk that part of the track in safety… I really just need to do a walk-through for a couple hours. Maybe I’ll bring a girl in a bikini or a boy on a skate board to throw in front of some. Or both. I never considered both :D Haha that wold be super American of me!
Alright then, time sufficiently killed. To Supperclub!
