so about my Friday.
I went to Mighty for the first time on Friday Night. I went to see Martin Buttrich (bu-trick ;) ), wh is a long-time favorite I’ve missed the last 2 or 3 times he’s played in SF since his debut.
As for the venue: they love their fog machine. Fortunately I could still breath. The bathrooms are also really nice, and their side room (which I understand they don’t use much) was really well out-fitted for balanced sound and good atmosphere.
The main room’s sound was obviously a challenge to arrange… the room is oddly shaped, and the speaker placement is pretty weird. the best sound quality is right smack in the middle of the dancefloor, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. However, as the kind of attendee that likes to see everything going on, I would prefer it if here was a good balance of noise front and center so I can dance in front of the stage.
I also understand why are plugs are sold at the coat check, because that speaker system is CRANKED. My ears hurt into the next day :( Lesson learned.
Also, really unhappy looking bar tenders. Either there should be more of them, or they should be paid better. I can understand needing to rush around, but I don’t need attitude, and the sad reality is, you make less tips when you don’t smile. All 4 girls behind the counter looked like they hated life. If there’s a second bar, why wasn’t it utilized?
Also, neither the bartenders nor the admissions staff could tell us what the transaction fee on the ATM was. It’s always nice when at least one person within earshot of the door is well informed about the workings of the venue. Excuse me, not nice, but really expected.
The smoking section seemed well-proportioned, and I like that there seems to be a good radius of accessible, safe parking.
As for my personal experience for the night:
While ordering a drink, a man in a pikachu costume elbowed me right on the ridge of my brow. Normally I would fake being fine so this person didn’t feel guilty, but the pain was hard to hide as I have my eyebrow pierced. I got a shot of tequila out of it ^_^
Buttrich did not disappoint, but I would like to see him again in a less chaotic environment. I find that almost always renders different performance from the artist.
Everyone in attendance was super super super friendly. That’s fine, except when the ratio of men to women is really unbalanced, and I’m being stopped to be hit on literally every 3 feet. Yes, I am genuinely and unapologetically complaining about that.
